Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is without a doubt the most famous play he's ever written. Although this play may seem like a love story, it's widely known as a revenge tragedy. The subjects of this tragedy are no other than the most famous pair of star-crossed lovers: fair Juliet Capulet and lovestruck Romeo Montague. The Capulets and the Montagues are nemesis families, so can you guess what happens when Romeo crashes the Capulet's party and falls in love-at-first-sight with Juliet? If you said a double suicide between a 13 and a 16 year old, you were right. Shakespeare captures the foolishness of young love in Romeo and Juliet perfectly. Romeo and Juliet fall in love, Friar Lawrence secretly marries them, Juliet fakes her death to run away with Romeo, but Romeo isn't let in on the fact that Juliet isn't really dead and he kills himself. Once Juliet sees that Romeo killed himself, she kills herself for real because a life without him is not a life she wishes to live.
